Working from home, comfortably.

How I Created a Stress-Free Working Environment.

“Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling”, and given so many of us are also working from home these days, it is more important than ever to create an atmosphere that provides both comfort and ambiance.

For me, it’s the little things that make the big difference, whether it’s something pretty to look at, reminders strategically placed, lighting, music; just the overall feel can make me more productive both personally and in my work-space.

I wanted to share a few of the favorites that are helping me get through this challenging time while we are social-distancing.

Create an atmosphere in which anything is possible.

For me, candles work every time.  The scent of a candle can bring me back to an event, a particular time or just help to create a mood I am looking for.  It’s a way to add aromatherapy to your work-space.  I particularly like beach and spring candles; they make me want to open all of the windows and just breathe in the fresh air, even if it is cold out.

Salt lamps can add atmosphere into any room. I have one on my desk which adds a warm, amber glow to the whole space.  In fact, it’s the first light I turn on in the morning and the last one to go out.  The crystals in a salt lamp add to the different colors it projects.

I find mindfulness cards very helpful and, when needed, can bring my attention back to where I need it to be.  We have so much time to think these days. For me, too much time, and sometimes I get so preoccupied, I lose my focus. I find these cards help me get back to what I was doing. There are so many different types available; these were recommended to me and they’ve been on my desk ever since.

I find a diffuser can enhance a space before I even walk into the room. The aroma literally calls to you and the feeling travels throughout the house. It is a very warm welcome when you need to get down to business.

Now, one might ask why I need a foot spa and I would say that while I do my own manicures, I really miss being able to go for pedicures. This is a nice alternative if you are looking to relax a bit. And, if I am completely honest, it works great under my desk while I am working as well as if I am sitting in a chair reading a book.  This was very reasonably priced and I find it really works.

I find a yoga mat creates motivation for me, whether I use it to try to meditate for a few minutes each day and/or to follow a yoga app or just do some stretching on my own.  I particularly like this one: it’s reasonably priced, a bit thicker and works on any surface in any room.

Hand-cream doesn’t sound like such a big idea but having it right near me on my desk enables me to use it more frequently. I buy the ones with the fragrances that remind me of a spa setting.  It’s a small thing but, at the end of the day, makes a huge difference for hands and gives me that spa feel while I work.

Crystals mean different things to different people.  For me, I have always found they give off positive vibes and add to the atmosphere of any room that you are in.  The light bounces off them and the colors change, no electricity involved, just natural light.

Music or sounds of nature in the background can create a Zen-like atmosphere and a stress-free environment.

I have made several playlists on Spotify but there are so many options here.  My daughter collects older albums and has a turntable in her room. Even your favorite CDs can work if you have a player.

Inspirational sayings around my office and my home always make me smile when I come across them, even if it’s just looking up from my computer for a brief moment.  These are so easy to find, either on Pinterest, Google Images or, if you’re creative, you can literally pick out a quote you like and print it out or write it yourself.

These are just a few of the things that I have learned make a big difference.

It’s possible to live and work in the same space and, moving forward, it may be part of what the new norm looks like.

I would also love any of your suggestions; this is a great time to learn from each other and get new ideas.
